"Driver Clarence, who was up behind Bennett Volo (3) 2:131/2, an Indianapolis winner, is an 80-year-old Negro who knows what it was to be a slave."

"Bennett Volo won the event for three-year-old trotters, He carried Avery to a break in the first heat and won, the McDonald colt turning the tables on him in the second. It was the turn of Bennett Volo in the final, Avery leaving his feet near the three-quarter pole."
