| "Buddy" Johnson was born and raised in Milan, TN, along with his brother, "Possum". Buddy became interested in horses at a young age and went to work for Christian Barham in Tennessee, later for Eddie Barham at Harlou Farm, St. Louis. Buddy then spent time as an apprentice for Gray Barham and Al Bailey.
Buddy's first training job was in Canada at Dufferin Farm, followed by moves to Cloverleaf Farm and Valley View Stables in New York. These jobs, and years of education were in preparation for 27 years of being self-employed as a public show horse trainer. Buddy operated The Buddy Johnson Stable, from Gerry, New York. The facility is still in use today, now owned and operated by one of Buddy's apprentices, Scott McKinney. Another of Buddy's apprentices, Brian Billings, is himself a well-respected trainer as well. Over the years Buddy trained horses such as: Dream Flowers, Grandview Sensation, Dawn's Squadron Leader and Broadway Strutter. He was a member of the UPHA, AHSA, ASHA and ASHA of New York. |
